For our newest Alfa member interview, we sat down with Catherine Molina from Santiago, Chile. Meet a dynamic leader in the logistics industry who began with an internship and, in 2008, launched her own company with just knowledge and determination. Catherine is also passionate about sustainability, innovation, and delivering personalized service. In this interview, she shares her journey, insights on the industry, and the value of being part of a global logistics network.
How did you get started in the logistics industry and what has your journey been like so far?
My start in the logistics industry began with an internship in an international transport company. I had the opportunity to work in different areas that made up the supply chain management.
After gaining experience and facing different challenges, in 2008 without a penny, only with my knowledge, positive attitude and a great desire to work and contribute valuable and collaboratively to the world of international trade and also support entrepreneurs in my country, I bravely dared to open my own Company.
If there is one thing that you could change to the logistics industry, what would it be and why?
If I could change anything in the logistics industry, it would be to improve sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint. By focusing on sustainability, companies can strengthen their image and attract consumers who value environmental responsibility.
Logistics has a significant environmental impact due to transport emissions and resource use. Implementing more sustainable practices would help mitigate this effect.
This shift would not only benefit the planet, but could also open up new business opportunities in an increasingly environmentally conscious market.
What is the most exciting project or shipment you have been working on recently?
One of our recent challenges was coordinating a complex shipment of high-tech equipment for a major renewable energy project in Chile.
But I must honestly say that for me every shipment and every project is exciting as regardless of its size it means a new challenge which involves working closely with multiple stakeholders in the supply chain, including suppliers, shipping and airline companies and the final customer, ensuring that each operation is smooth and successful.
What life lesson has working in logistics taught you?
Working in logistics has taught me several valuable lessons, but one of the most important is the importance of adaptability. In such a dynamic environment, where unexpected challenges are commonplace, learning to adapt quickly to changes and find effective solutions is crucial.
I have also learned about the value of effective communication. Coordination between different stakeholders is essential to the success of any project, and keeping lines of communication open helps to avoid misunderstandings and solve problems more efficiently.
Finally, patience and perseverance are essential, as challenges often arise that require time and effort to overcome. These lessons are not only applicable in the workplace, but also in personal life.
What do you like most about the industry and your job in particular?
What I like most about the logistics industry is its dynamic nature and the constant challenge it presents. Every day is different, with new problems to solve and opportunities to explore. This makes the work exciting and engaging.
In my job in particular, I appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders from various sectors. This collaboration fosters creativity and innovation in the search for solutions.
In addition, being part of a process that ensures goods reach their destination efficiently and on time gives me a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
Finally, I enjoy the impact logistics has on global trade and economies, as it plays a crucial role in connecting people and businesses around the world.
How do you set yourself apart from your competitors?
To be honest I don’t like to use the word “competitors” as I feel that each logistics company is unique and each has an important value to bring to the industry and ultimately we are all constantly faced with daily challenges and stresses to move freight around the world.
I could say that our added value is that we deliver personalised service that also involves innovation and technology. Prioritising building strong relationships with clients, understanding their unique needs and providing customised solutions that exceed their expectations, which builds trust and loyalty with our customers.
What do you like the most about being a member of our logistics network?
What I like most about being a member of our logistics network is the sense of community and collaboration it fosters. Being part of a network allows us to share knowledge, resources and best practices, which improves our overall efficiency and effectiveness.
In addition, access to a wide range of knowledge and perspectives from other members helps me stay informed about industry trends and innovations. This collaboration not only enhances my own operations, but also contributes to the success of the entire network.
Finally, the support and camaraderie among members creates a positive environment in which we can face challenges together and celebrate our successes, making the logistics journey more rewarding.
How do you relax in your free time?
I enjoy watching films, for example, I am currently watching episodes of “Black Mirror”. The series offers a fascinating exploration of technology and its impact on society, often presenting disturbing and thought-provoking scenarios. Each episode is like a stand-alone story that raises questions about the future and ethics, making it an intriguing and sometimes disturbing experience.
I enjoy outdoor activities, appreciating the beauty of nature.
I like to spend time with my family and friends. I also enjoy good wine. Appreciating a good wine is an experience that combines taste, aroma and often a rich history behind each bottle. In addition, combining wine with food can further enhance the culinary experience.
These activities help me to relax and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
