For this month’s Alfa member interview, we had a conversation with Jean Estephan from Beirut, Lebanon. He talked about starting his own business, the increasing competition from shipping lines and the many advantages of working in logistics.
How did you get started in the logistics industry and what has your journey been like so far?
At the start, I was working in a trading company for twelve years. First, I was as a senior accountant, after which I was promoted to supply chain supervisor. In 2013, I opened my own forwarding and clearance company. Like with every business, there are ups and downs but due to my experience I was able to maintain the stability of the business.
If there is one thing that you could change to the logistics industry, what would it be and why?
In my opinion, there are a lot of things that should be changed. The most important thing is the direct competition we get from carriers. In my country, each shipping line has its own freight forwarding company so they are dealing with clients directly.
How do you set yourself apart from your competitors?
As mentioned before, our experience in handling various types of commodities (especially perishables, pharmaceuticals, and food stuff) and the expertise of our staff makes that our clients trust us. This, in turn, gives us a good reputation and opportunities to expand our market share.
What do you like most about the industry and your job in particular?
The thing I like most is that we don’t have a fixed routine, every day brings new challenges. Also, we come in contact with many different companies and industries. These experiences allow us to accomplish great achievements.
What do you like the most about being a member of our logistics network?
Frankly speaking, we are a new member but we took the decision to join Alfa because of the professionalism of the members. We are sure our membership will improve our reputation and bring many other benefits.
How do you relax in your free time?
In my free time, I prefer to spend time with family and friends in my beautiful home town. Hopefully, you will be able to visit it in the coming year and after that it will be the best destination for relaxation.
— Thanks, Jean!
