In what could be a significant development, an LNG tanker appears to have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz for the first time since the Middle East conflict erupted in late February. Reports based on ship tracking data from platforms like MarineTraffic suggest this could mark a notable moment for energy exports from the region.
Details About the Tanker
The vessel, identified as the Mubaraz, is operated by ADNOC Logistics & Services, a division of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). With a capacity exceeding 136,000 cubic meters, the tanker was last tracked in the Persian Gulf on March 30. By the end of April, it was detected off India’s western coast, indicating it had likely passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
If confirmed, this would be the first LNG tanker to transit the strait since the conflict began on February 28. The war has led to significant disruptions in oil and gas exports, with Iran largely restricting passage through the critical waterway.
Concerns Over Data Reliability
Despite the promising signs, experts advise caution. Alex Froley, an analyst with data platform ICIS, highlighted the possibility of ships in the region manipulating or disabling their tracking systems to avoid detection or seizure.
“While there’s no clear evidence of tampering in this case, official confirmation is still pending,” Froley noted.
Such tactics are not uncommon in the area, with vessels sometimes broadcasting false identification numbers or turning off their tracking devices entirely.
Implications for the Global Gas Market
If the Mubaraz’s transit is verified, it could offer a glimmer of hope for the global gas market. However, analysts warn that one successful passage does not necessarily signal a broader resumption of LNG exports through the strait.
Earlier in April, attempts by Qatari LNG tankers to navigate the Strait of Hormuz were unsuccessful, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the region.
While this potential breakthrough is encouraging, the situation remains uncertain, and the global energy sector continues to monitor developments closely.
