Ground Handling Organizations Struggle with Rising Fuel Costs in the Aviation Industry

The Aviation Services Association (ASA) is drawing attention to the increasing financial strain on ground handling organizations (GHOs) as global fuel prices continue to surge, impacting the entire aviation sector.

While airlines have responded to rising fuel costs by implementing passenger surcharges, they are simultaneously pressuring suppliers, including GHOs, to absorb cost reductions. This leaves GHOs in a challenging position: grappling with the same fuel-driven cost increases as airlines but with limited options to offset the financial burden.

Labor expenses, which account for 50 to 65 percent of GHO operating costs, remain a critical factor. Operators are resisting calls to reduce workforce levels as a cost-saving measure, mindful of the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Staffing cuts during the pandemic led to significant operational disruptions during the recovery period, with many experienced workers leaving the industry permanently. GHOs are determined to avoid repeating those mistakes.

Adding to these challenges, GHOs are operating under reduced and unpredictable flight schedules, which strain passenger-facing staff, hinder financial performance, and disrupt cash flow. These conditions highlight the urgent need for balanced and sustainable solutions that fairly distribute the burden across the aviation value chain.

To support its members, ASA provides transparent market data and analysis, enabling operators to navigate these complex challenges. However, ASA emphasizes that each operator makes independent commercial decisions. The association does not set, recommend, or coordinate pricing actions and remains fully committed to compliance with competition laws.

ASA urges airlines and all aviation stakeholders to acknowledge the shared nature of these pressures and engage in constructive dialogue to ensure the long-term resilience, safety, and sustainability of ground operations worldwide.
