How did you first get interested in logistics, and what keeps you motivated in this field?
After graduating, I immediately started my career in logistics. Despite lacking experience, I recognized the growing demand in Libya’s shipping sector. The challenges have accelerated my learning and fueled my excitement to grow. My company has been supportive, sharing their expertise to help me develop my skills.
What do you see as the biggest challenge in logistics today, and how do you think the industry is handling it?
From Libyan context, the biggest challenge in logistics today, is the outdated infrastructure at our ports, which leads to inefficiencies and delays. The industry is working on modernization efforts, but progress is slow. Enhanced coordination among local and global partners is essential to streamline operations and overcome these obstacles.
How do you handle the pressure of meeting tight delivery deadlines and coordinating complex operations?
By embracing the unique challenges of each shipment type.
For RoRo shipments, the lack of port equipment means our team must take an active role throughout the entire process, ensuring that everything runs smoothly from start to finish.
With medical shipments, the inherent urgency compels us to act quickly and efficiently. I understand that conditions at Libyan ports can create obstacles, so I focus on navigating these complexities proactively, often planning months in advance to ensure timely delivery.
What valuable life lesson has your experience in logistics taught you?
Communication is key to problem-solving in logistics. When I started, I tried to handle everything on my own, but with the guidance of my manager and team, I quickly realized the importance of teamwork—not just within our local team, but also with global partners who facilitate the process. One memorable instance was when we collaborated with our second branch the day before a holiday, when everything would be closed for a week. Thanks to our teamwork and notifying them for assist, we were able to manage an urgent delivery smoothly.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting in your line of work?
Navigating this industry without seeking help is unwise. It’s essential to keep learning—not just about local logistics, but also to stay updated on cutting-edge technology relevant to our work. It may sound cliché, but this field truly offers valuable lessons; you will learn a lot from your mistakes.
How do you view the Libyan market for the rest of 2024 leading into 2025?
We’re seeing a significant surge in shipping driven by a rise in construction projects across Libya, spanning from universities and roads to entire agricultural fields. This level of import and export activity hasn’t been witnessed in nearly 50 years. I hope this momentum will strengthen our partnerships as we collaborate on these important projects.
What do you value most about being a member of our logistics network?
The opportunity to meet and collaborate with various open-minded logistics companies has been invaluable. They understand the ups and downs of project work, and their kindness and support have made a significant difference.
This network has also opened many doors for us to work with renowned partners. I’d like to thank the entire network staff for their guidance and support in helping us join; you have been incredibly helpful.
When you’re not focused on logistics, how do you like to unwind and enjoy your free time?
At the end of the day, I enjoy reading classic literature. These stories offer lessons on handling various situations and insights into life in general.
What’s one thing your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
I love meeting people, but I’m not a fan of traveling, likely due to my introverted nature. That’s why I enjoy Zoom/Team meetings—they let me connect without the stress of travel. It’s a bit ironic for someone in the logistics field!
Thank you, Nour, for sharing your inspiring journey and insights with us!
